Get that Vintage Drum Sound

For the lovely warm drum tone that you hear in the demo we spent a great deal of time tuning the hybrid vintage drum set that we used for the perfect jazz drum sound. As you’ll hear in the demo, the kick drum is soft and has a clearly defined ‘note’ to give it character.

The tom toms were tuned quite high and had little to no dampening while the snare drum was tuned mid range with only a small amount of dampening and LOTS of snare rattle on the underside of the drum.

To capture that fizzy rattle on the snare drum we added an extra mic during recording to the underside of the drum and mixed that ‘out of phase’ with the overhead snare mic. That’s what gives the snare drum such a fat and crunchy sound.

Gorgeous Live Room Ambience

The medium sized live room that we used was perfect for jazz. There’s enough room ambience to give the loops a live ‘small club’ sound without adding too much colouration to the recording. You can emphasize the room ambience more by adding some more aggressive compression to the drum loops if your full band mix has the space

Hi-Hat and Ride Pattterns

Another aspect that we think you’ll find really useful with ‘Smokin Hot Jazz Drums’ are the pure ‘hi-hat’ and ‘ride’ patterns that we included. These are standard traditional jazz rhythms that were played only on the hi-hat or ride cymbals so you can easily use them for intros or breakdowns in your song.

When it’s time pick up the power simply drop in a full drum pattern that has the kick and snare and you’re back in action. Jazz music is full of dynamics and you’ll have those at your fingertips with this sample pack. There’s also a wealth of groove variations so that you can keep things interesting and spontaneous, the way a real jazz drummer performs.

Here’s a quick example of how fun and easy it is to build your basic jazz drum track in any DAW. Simply create an audio track in your DAW and load in a standard jazz ‘hi-hat’ loop like this one.

You could loop that for a few bars and then introduce a snare brushes and hi-hat groove to create a gradual progression during your song intro.

When you’re ready for the full band to drop in with all instruments on deck use a full drum loop like the one below to give the song some organic motion. By working in this really simply way you can quickly create your own unique jazz drum tracks that will make your song sound like a live band.
